not sure if this is a bug or something, I can add groups, but only 4 will show in the new course  

 

Also, is there a relationship between categories and groups? Also, how come there are no sub categories/sections like in joomla... (terminology use suggests they are kinda the same :) lol)

Category is used for navigation. It means user can navigate to your course through different categories. There are no sections for the courses, therefore you can add your course just to a category, no section.

Group is used as a further attribute for the course. It is displayed next to your course title on the website. It can be useful to use groups especially for filtering the data in your administration.

All the groups you created and are published should be available while creating a new course.
